POST-UFC FIGHT NIGHT 111: ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back in Singapore for the second time in promotional history Saturday (June 17, 2017) with UFC Fight Night 111: Holm vs. Correia. It was an entertaining night of bits that saw half of 12 bouts end inside the distance, and with that activity today in our rear view, let us take a look at that of the day’s competitors we might no longer see going to work within the Octagon…
ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK
Andrei Arlovski
Arlovski came up short in a unanimous-decision reduction to Marcin Tybura and has suffered five straight defeats inside the Octagon, with all five of them coming from the heavy hitters of this division. It would not shock me to see him get another chance, but I think it is very likely that we have seen the last of Arlovski. If they wanted to keep him around, I think they would have given him another competitor than Tybura, as the Pole was riding a red hot win streak with a pair of knockout finishes.
Tarec Saffiedine
Saffiedine has now suffered three consecutive defeats and is 1-4 in his past five trips within the Octagon. The lone victory during this stretch was a unanimous-decision over Jake Ellenberger. As a result of this losing streak, I think there is a fair chance that the promotion will opt to part ways with all the prior Strikeforce welterweight champion. I would say it’s 50/50 as to whether we see Saffiedine stay in the business.
Takanori Gomi
Gomi has last four in a row — all via first-round finish — and it is likely that the 38-year-old veteran will likely be receiving his walking papers from the advertising. The fact that there’s a card coming up in Japan makes me think they may give him yet another crack, so at this time, we’ve got a 50/50 shot at best of seeing»The Fireball Kid» back.
